Sam Carpenter: Executive Director
Indianapolis, IN — Sam Carpenter has been named Executive Director of the Hoosier Environmental Council (HEC), Indiana’s largest statewide environmental policy organization. In this role, he will lead HEC’s work on climate issues, public health, air and water policy, forests and wildlife, and environmental justice.
Most recently, Carpenter was Executive Director of Global Gifts, an Indiana-based nonprofit fair trade retail outlet. During his tenure, sales of sustainable goods increased from $196,000 to over $1.8 million and staff grew from one to 25 employees. Previously, Carpenter consulted with small businesses and nonprofits on strategic planning, turnarounds, and growth strategies. Earlier in his career, he served as Director of Recruitment and Evaluation at Public Allies in Cincinnati where he engaged employers participating in an AmeriCorps-funded program to hire young adults for paid internships.
As a citizen-volunteer in Indianapolis, Carpenter has been an active advocate for environmental issues including meeting with legislators, speaking at rallies, and taking part in events related to mass transit, coal, and renewable energy.
In Indiana communities and at the statehouse, Hoosier Environmental Council (HEC) advocates for better quality of life through public health, economic well-being, and the preservation of nature—from advancing renewable energy to protecting children from lead poisoning. HEC aims to advance solutions that are good for the economy and good for the environment. For more information, visit www.hecweb.org.
