Lacy Shirey

Lacy Shirey has joined the Elizabeth River Project as Executive Director. She brings a deep commitment to the environmental health of the Hampton Roads area and over 13 years of experience in nonprofit leadership.

Most recently, Shirey served as the Executive Director of the Chesapeake Humane Society. In this role, she demonstrated a strong focus on building trust and fostering connections within the Hampton Roads community. Under her leadership, the organization became a “River Star Business” recognized by the Elizabeth River Project for documenting pollution prevention and wildlife habitat creation. Additionally, Shirey has been actively involved with the Chesapeake Environmental Improvement Council, showcasing her commitment to environmental stewardship.

Previously, she was Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of the Virgina Beach SPCA where she was responsible for revenue development through marketing and mission-related business income and philanthropic giving by individuals, businesses, and foundations.

Through equitable collaboration with diverse communities, businesses, and governments, the Elizabeth River Project has worked since 1993 to restore the environmental health of the Elizabeth River. Once presumed dead, this urban river encompasses one of the largest maritime ports on the East Coast of the United States.
